Compositore inglese. Prima dei vent'anni entrò al servizio dell'ambasciatore inglese a Parigi, e qui ebbe modo di conoscere l'air de cour francese, che influenzò decisamente le sue prime arie e canzoni. Più tardi ricevette da Oxford e Cambridge il baccellierato di musica e viaggiò in Germania e in Italia (fu a Venezia, ove conobbe G. Croce, a Firenze, a Bologna), finché venne assunto (1598) in qualità di liutista presso la corte di Cristiano iv di Danimarca; ritornato in patria (1606), ricoprì dal 1612 la stessa carica alla corte di Londra. La sua fama di compositore si affida principalmente ad alcune raccolte di songs, molti dei quali nutriti di succhi popolari, mentre altri, di struttura più complessa e raffinata, rivelano l'influsso dei grandi madrigalisti europei, in specie di L. Marenzio....
