Nata in Sri Lanka, ha completato gli studi negli Stati Uniti, dove ora vive, e considera entrambi i paesi la sua patria. Giornalista militante, è impegnata nel campo dell’assistenza umanitaria e delle politiche del lavoro. Cura un blog di letteratura e politica sull’Huffington Post. La sua prima pubblicazione risale all’infanzia, quando ha scritto a un quotidiano una lettera di protesta perché il suo cartone animato preferito era stato interrotto da un discorso del presidente dello Sri Lanka. In seguito, i suoi racconti hanno avuto spazio sulle più importanti riviste letterarie americane, mentre il suo romanzo d’esordio, Una ragazza disobbediente, è stato candidato al DSC Prize for South Asian Literature e tradotto in sette lingue.
