The Double

"What's the use of all this if in the end I am still alone?" Dostoyevsky's second published work, The Double, is a surprisingly modern hallucinatory nightmare in which a timid government official named Golyadkin becomes aware of a mysterious doppelgänger, an unsettling mirror of himself who embodies all the traits Golyadkin lacks: confidence, charm, and a complete disregard for societal norms.
