1917, Brooklyn, New York

Batterista e caporchestra statunitense di jazz. Bambino prodigio, a undici anni si produsse già con una propria orchestra. Nel 1938 suonò con Joe Marsala e poi con Bunny Berigan, Artie Shaw, Tommy Dorsey, Benny Carter, e dal 1947 in numerosi concerti del «Jazz at the Philharmonic». Solista e accompagnatore vigoroso, incise anche con Charlie Parker e Lester Young. Dagli anni '60 diresse una propria orchestra.
