He has worked for various well-known news organizations and taught languages in Kenya, France, and Canada. Waya received Christ as his personal Savior when he was seventeen. He holds a diploma in biblical studies from the Bible school of the Nairobi Lighthouse Church in Kenya. He has also studied at universities in his native Kenya, France, and Canada.
