Al Alvarez

Al Alvarez (Londra 1929) è un poeta, critico e saggista inglese. Dal 1956 al 1966 ha diretto la pagina di poesia dell’Observer. Nel 1962 ha curato l’antologia The New Poetry facendo conoscere ai lettori britannici poeti del calibro di John Berryman, Robert Lowell, Sylvia Plath, Zbigniew Herbert e Miroslav Holub. Nel 1972 ha scritto un celebre saggio sul suicidio, The Savage God, che prende spunto dalla sua lunga amicizia con Sylvia Plath e Ted Hughes. Persona dagli interessi molteplici e variegati, si è occupato anche di alpinismo, Feeding the Rat, divorzio, Life After Marriage, e insonnia, Night. Una delle sue più grandi passioni è il poker a cui ha dedicato The Biggest Game in Town.
