For Ken La Salle, any 21st century American existentialist philosophy must, after half a decade of division, begin at the core of that division, not with the memes or the keywords but with the instrument of division itself. Some of those instruments, like ICE or MAGA or even religion, appear to be the key but they are simply manifestations of our division. Our fawning over billionaires is a manifestation of what divides us. Our love of guns, our ideas of “charity,” property value, our veneration of our military – everything from gambling to psychics – they’re all just a manifestation of the divisions we build all around us. We have a perfect metaphor for the divisions we build, that we constantly build, all around us in the fences encircling our homes, our schools, cities and country, dividing you, defining you. We build them all the time in ways both literal and figurative. Welcome, then, to Fences. Fences is an anti-division, anti-gambling, anti-“charity”, anti-psychic, anti-manifesting, anti-religion, anti-politics, anti-military, anti-gun, anti-billionaire, anti-ICE, anti-MAGA, anti-fence plea to a dissolving America.
