Set against the fading years of white minority rule in Rhodesia and the uncertain dawn of an independent Zimbabwe, Frontier Gold is a richly textured historical novel of ambition, loyalty, and survival in Southern Africa’s remote mining frontier. In the rugged hills along the Zimbabwe–Mozambique border, where colonial authority is weakening and liberation movements are reshaping the political landscape, the discovery of a rich gold deposit promises fortune to those bold enough to claim it. But in a region scarred by war, shifting allegiances, and fragile new governments, wealth drawn from the earth comes at a dangerous price. Franco de Menezes, an experienced mining engineer and independent-minded entrepreneur, sees opportunity in the wilderness where others see only risk. Determined to build something lasting from his discovery, he must navigate not only the technical challenges of mining in an isolated frontier, but also the growing influence of politics in a newly independent nation. Across the divide stands Ike Chikamba, once a freedom fighter and now a rising political figure in Zimbabwe’s new government. For Ike, the gold deposit represents more than wealth—it is power, legitimacy, and security in a rapidly changing world. As their ambitions collide, the frontier becomes a place where political authority, personal loyalty, and survival are constantly tested. Drawing on the realities of mining life, regional history, and the upheaval surrounding independence in Southern Africa, Frontier Gold brings to life a landscape where opportunity and danger exist side by side. Villages, mining camps, and border towns form the backdrop to a story in which ordinary people struggle to adapt to extraordinary change. At its heart, Frontier Gold is a story about the transformative power of both gold and history—how the promise of wealth can build nations, destroy friendships, and reshape destinies, and how the end of one era rarely brings the certainty of the next. After several years of financially rewarding production, the gold reef is proven to extend across the Mozambique border. Unwilling to mine illegally in a foreign jurisdiction, Franco insists on halting operations. Ike, however, driven by power and profit, refuses—and compels Franco to relinquish the mine entirely. Franco is not so easily defeated. Crossing the border into Mozambique, he lawfully secures mining rights and establishes his own mining operation—only metres from Ike's mine and develops towards the same gold reef. Now promoted to Minister of Defence, Ike is enraged. Abusing his authority, he orders an army unit to cross into Mozambique, arrest Franco, and shut the rival mine down. The illegal incursion spirals into chaos. The Mozambican government demands an explanation, and the scandal ends Ike's political career when the President summarily dismisses him. Ruined politically and bleeding money, Ike is driven to increasingly dangerous extremes in a bid to survive. Blending historical realism with relentless suspense, Frontier Gold explores how gold can transform lives—sometimes enriching them, often destroying them—and asks the enduring question: what is the true cost of striking it rich?
