Arthur Machen, pseudonimo di Arthur Llewelyn Jones, è stato uno scrittore gallese, per Stephen King in assoluto il miglior autore di storie di fantasmi in lingua inglese. Giornalista, saggista, traduttore (Memorie di Casanova, 1894), scrisse alcuni romanzi di un certo successo, come Il gran dio Pan (The great god Pan, 1894); ma è noto soprattutto per i racconti del soprannaturale, dove spesso utilizzò elementi tratti dalle leggende e dal folclore del natio Galles per creare sfondi suggestivi alle misteriose vicende che l’hanno reso famoso tra i cultori della letteratura fantastica.
