Holy Bible
Webster's Bible The Webster's Bible is an early and significant American revision of the King James Version (KJV), first published in 1833. Its translator, Noah Webster (1758–1843), is far more famous for his American Dictionary of the English Language. Motivated by both patriotism and a desire for linguistic clarity, Webster sought to create a Bible suited for the new United States. Webster's primary goal was not to produce a new translation from ancient manuscripts, but to cautiously update the familiar KJV. He focused on replacing obsolete words, archaic verb endings, and grammatical constructions that had become confusing to early 19th-century readers. For instance, he changed "wit" to "know," "ought" to "owed," and modernized many "thee" and "thou" forms. He also corrected some obvious printer's errors found in standard KJV editions of his time. A notable feature is Webster's treatment of the divine name. In the Old Testament, he replaced the KJV's "LORD" and "GOD" (in small capitals) with "Jehovah" in key passages, aiming for greater specificity. His revision was generally conservative, leaving doctrine and the underlying Textus Receptus Greek text untouched. Although it did not achieve the lasting popularity of the KJV, the Webster's Bible was an important step in the history of the English Bible in America. It represents one of the first systematic efforts to modernize the language of scripture for an American readership. Today, it is valued by historians of the Bible and remains in the public domain, with some modern reprints available for those interested in this pioneering American revision.
