The final words of the Gospel of John might also be written about John's gospel itself: "There are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written" (21:25). Books about the fourth gospel fill library shelves; courses on John are prominent in colleges and seminaries; and film and dramatic presentations based on John are produced every year. John's gospel has inspired Christian believers and challenged biblical scholars since the time of its composition. Why does it inspire? Why does it challenge? In this commentary, Dr. Jonathan D. Huntzinger shows that John's book is unique among the gospels because it emphasizes that Jesus offers the eternal life of God to the people of God. Huntzinger shows that John describes Jesus as God's Word upon whom the Spirit descended and remained, so that John's readers will see the ministry of Jesus as the beginning of a new creative work of God.
