Ringo Starr joined The Beatles in August 1962, replacing Pete Best to complete the classic lineup as the group solidified in Liverpool and Hamburg. Distinctive from the start: Ringo was less flashy than many of his contemporaries, but highly musical, inventive and perfectly suited to the music rather than ego-driven display. His steady timing, unusual fills, and left-handed approach on a right-handed kit gave The Beatles a subtly unique rhythmic character that became a core part of their sound. During Beatlemania, Starr quickly became one of the most recognisable faces in the world. While he contributed fewer songs than the band's other members, he still took lead vocals on beloved tracks such as "With a Little Help from My Friends" and "Yellow Submarine", as well as writing and signing the iconic "Octopus's Garden". His comedic timing stood out when performing with the band in films like A Hard Day's Night (1964) and Help! (1965), his affable personality made him a natural focus for audience affection, often rivalling the others in popularity polls. By the time The Beatles disbanded in 1970, Starr had contributed to some of the most influential recordings in modern music history, leaving behind a legacy defined by feel, restraint and understated creativity rather than virtuoso showmanship. SAMPLE QUOTE "I'm the laziest Beatle. I'm quite happy to finish an album and go sit back. I can enjoy myself just sitting back and playing with all the toys, and the kids and the wife... I enjoy playing with the wife." - Ringo, on his distinct role among his bandmates, and his then-wife, Maureen Cox, Beatles Anthology, 2000 SAMPLE FACT Ringo was the first Beatle to (temporarily) leave the band. In August 1968, Ringo walked out of the fractious White Album sessions, but returned two weeks later to find his drum kit covered in flowers spelling out "Welcome Back, Ringo".
