There are many good reasons to visit Milan. A city of business, fashion and design, it has numerous theatres, museums and galleries. Milan in the 21st century is a metropolis that preserves the symbols of an illustrious and ancient past and at the same time has shown it is capable of renewing itself and change. Milan is a modern, European, cosmopolitan city capable of welcoming millions of people from different cultures while preserving its own style, characteristic of ‘old Milan’. The contemporary city is the result of rebuilding, demolition and major restructuring that have endowed it with a distinctive appearance in relation to other Italian cities of art. In an urban fabric that is heterogeneous but certainly rich and stimulating there appear the landmarks of its glorious past: from the late Roman period to the medieval city-states, from the rule of the Visconti and Sforza dynasties to the Spanish period, from Habsburg rule in the 18th century to the splendour of the Napoleonic age, from the period of early industrialisation to Art Nouveau style and Deco, all the way to the second post-war period and the closing decades of the 20th century, with the stimulus of the new contemporary architecture that has changed the perception of the city.
