My Early Education

In 1931, Hu Shih was turning forty, and began writing his autobiography. In a language simple and plain - the vernacular style he had advocated in 1917 for the New Culture Movement - he remembered his childhood. Fatherless from an early age, Hu Shih received an excellent education in Jixi, Anhui, thanks to his mother's adamant teaching. It was an education not only in becoming a classical scholar, but in becoming a tolerant person.
