Sean O'Casey

(Dublino 1880 - Torquay 1964) drammaturgo irlandese. Nato e cresciuto nei quartieri poveri di Dublino, autodidatta, scrisse i primi drammi per l’Abbey Theatre: Giunone e il pavone (Juno and the paycock, 1924), L’aratro e le stelle (The plough and the stars, 1926). Stabilitosi a Londra, scrisse tra l’altro Rose rosse per me (Red roses for me, 1946) e Il falò del vescovo (The bishop’s bonfire, 1955). Le opere del primo periodo rappresentano con rigoroso realismo la miseria del proletariato dublinese e i suoi tentativi di rivolta antinglese; motivi espressionistici caratterizzano le tragicommedie successive, accomunate comunque alle precedenti dagli accenti grotteschi e dall’aggressiva vivacità del dialogo.
