Rise of Al-Qaeda, The
This audiobook is narrated by a digital voice. The origins of radical Islamism trace back long before the dramatic rise of Al-Qaeda. It is rooted in a complex blend of religious ideology, political frustration, colonial legacy, and modern geopolitical upheaval. While Islam as a faith is centuries old and embraced by billions peacefully across the world, radical Islamism emerged as a distortion of its tenets, driven by specific thinkers, movements, and events that gave rise to a militant interpretation of jihad and the concept of an Islamic state governed by a strict interpretation of Sharia law. One of the most influential figures in the development of radical Islamist thought was Sayyid Qutb, an Egyptian writer and member of the Muslim Brotherhood. In the mid-20th century, Qutb became disillusioned with Western culture, which he viewed as morally corrupt and spiritually bankrupt. His time in the United States only reinforced this perception. Upon his return to Egypt, Qutb wrote extensively about the need for a vanguard of true Muslims to overthrow un-Islamic regimes—those he labeled as jahili, or ignorant, echoing the pre-Islamic era of paganism. His magnum opus, Milestones, called for the violent struggle against such systems and the establishment of an Islamic state. Qutb’s writings were highly influential among later generations of Islamist militants, including Ayman al-Zawahiri, who would become a key figure in Al-Qaeda. The ideological seeds planted by Qutb and others took root amid rising discontent in the Muslim world during the post-colonial period. The political landscapes of many countries in the Middle East and North Africa were marked by authoritarian regimes, widespread corruption, and socioeconomic inequality. The failure of secular nationalism, exemplified by figures like Egypt’s Gamal Abdel Nasser, led many to search for alternative models of governance. Islamist movements gained traction as they promised moral clarity, justice, and a return to divine order.
