Ralph Vaughan Williams

1872, Down Ampney, Gloucestershire

Compositore inglese. Studiò a Londra, Cambridge e Berlino (con M. Bruch). Organista a Lamberth, si dedicò a ricerche sull'antica musica inglese e sui canti popolari. A Parigi, dove fu nel 1910, ebbe lezioni da Ravel. Dopo la prima guerra mondiale insegnò al R. College of Music e compì varie tournées anche negli Stati Uniti, per dirigere le proprie composizioni. Fu anche direttore del Bach-Choir. Figura di primo piano nella musica inglese del nostro secolo, subì via via influenze determinanti, dalla musica popolare e inglese antica al neoclassicismo, a correnti più avanzate, mantenendo sempre, tuttavia, costanti legami con il tardo romanticismo tedesco e realizzando uno stile eclettico ma proprio, che ne ha fatto un importante mediatore tra la civiltà musicale del continente e quella anglosassone....
