These vocal works, written across various periods of his career, present a more intimate and lyrical side of the composer. Though far removed from the explosive energy of his orchestral and piano music, his songs retain his signature wit, rhythmic precision, and inventive harmonies. They often set texts by poets such as James Joyce, Ezra Pound, and other literary modernists, reflecting Antheil’s deep engagement with contemporary intellectual circles.

1900, Trenton, New Jersey

Compositore statunitense. Visse a lungo a Parigi, dove fu in contatto con gli ambienti dell'avanguardia, e in Germania, dedicandosi inizialmente al concertismo pianistico. Nel 1936 tornò in patria, stabilendosi a Hollywood. Compose 7 opere liriche fra cui Transatlantic (1930); 7 balletti fra cui Ballet mécanique (1927), per orchestra di incudini, eliche d'aeroplano, campanelli elettrici, trombe di automobile e 16 pianole; Dreams (1935; per la coreografia di Balanchine), Dance in four parts (1935; per la coreografia di M. Graham); 6 sinfonie e altra musica sinfonica, da camera, vocale e per film. Musicista eccentrico, risentì delle esperienze di linguaggio delle avanguardie europee, per aprirsi poi all'influsso del jazz.
