Printer's device on title page and 217 woodcut vignettes in text. 18<sup>th</sup>-century mottled calf, gilt spine with red morocco lettering piece, red edges, green silk bookmark, marbled pastedowns. On the front pastedown bookplate “Ex Libris C: Ludovici Pelleatti e Portugruario”. Light spotting and staining, but a good copy.</p> <p> </p> <p>Nicely printed pocket edition of Claude Paradin's emblem book, first published in French by Jean de Tournes at Lyons in 1551. This is the second Platin Latin edition, corrected with respect to his first (1562) and with a new dedication, signed by him, to Charles de Berlaymont. Plantin had also published an edition in the original French (<em>Dévises héroiques</em>) in 1561.</p> <p>Plantin became one of the major producers of emblem books in the Netherlands and brought Paradin's emblem book to a wide audience. Compared to the French original, this Latin edition in the translation of Johannes Gubernator contains (from p. 271) an appendix with Gabriele Symeoni's <em>Emblemat</em><em>a</em>, which means an addition of 37 more emblems. The illustrations include the devices of some printers of the time, among them Manutius' famous anchor with the dolphin (p. 274).
