The Oak and the Eagles opens the Calgach Scéla, reimagining the early life of the little-recorded Celtic figure Calgach in the years after Boudicca's defeat, as Rome pushes north and west through Britannia. Born into a maritime polity linking theFoyle to the western isles and lochs of Scotland, Calgach grows up in a worldshaped by kinship, obligation, and the narrow sea that binds communities onboth shores. His father is a merchant venturer and son of the overlord of north-westIreland; his mother is daughter of the Lord of the lochs and isles. Fromchildhood he is surrounded by craftsmen, warriors, and a foreign mentor – anEgyptian exile fleeing the legions. As Roman pressure intensifies, the Celticnations and clans face an inexorable foe. Calgach's journey carries him acrossland and water, through rival factions and shifting alliances, as he begins tounderstand the role he must play in a world on the edge of profound change.
