In the twilight years of the Eastern Han Dynasty, the empire that had stood for four centuries began to crumble like a dried leaf in autumn wind. The Emperor Xian sat upon a throne that had long since lost its power, a puppet in the hands of warlords who carved the land into fiefdoms of blood and iron. The people starved. The rivers ran red. And in the countryside, a rumour spread like wildfire—a prophecy that the dynasty was ending and that a new order would rise from the ashes. It was in this world of chaos and opportunity that three men met in a peach garden. The first was Liu Bei, a man of royal blood but humble means. He was a weaver of straw sandals by trade, a descendant of the Han imperial house by lineage. He was not tall, not handsome, not particularly strong. But he had something that none of his contemporaries possessed: the ability to inspire loyalty so deep that men would die for him without hesitation. The second was Guan Yu, a giant of a man with a face like red jade and a beard that fell to his chest. He was a fugitive, wanted for a crime he had committed in defense of justice. He carried a blade called the Green Dragon Crescent Saber, and it was said that when he swung it, the wind itself would howl in fear. The third was Zhang Fei, a boisterous, hot-tempered butcher whose voice could shatter glass and whose spear could pierce a thousand shields. He was crude, impulsive, and utterly devoted to his brothers. They met by chance, these three men, but they recognized something in each other that transcended coincidence. They saw in each other the same fire, the same ambition, the same desperate hope that the world could be made right again. And so, beneath the flowering branches of the peach trees, they knelt and swore an oath: We three, though of different surnames, become brothers. We swear to be of one heart and one mind. We will share life and death, honour and disgrace. We will rescue the people from their suffering and restore the Han dynasty to its rightful glory. If we betray this oath, may Heaven and Earth strike us down. That oath would echo through the centuries. It would inspire poets and generals, emperors and peasants. It would become the foundation of a kingdom and the cause of a thousand deaths. It was, in many ways, the beginning of everything that followed—and the end of everything that came before.
