Propr. Elizabeth Smith. Cantante statunitense di blues. Per la sua voce intensa e drammatica va considerata la più originale e significativa cantante di blues del periodo classico; nel decennio 1923-33 ottenne un enorme successo discografico (due milioni di copie vendute); dopo, in declino, si adattò anche a cantare testi mediocri. Fra i musicisti che l'accompagnarono su disco, Louis Armstrong, Fletcher Henderson, James P. Johnson.
