Judy Garland

1922, Grand Rapids, Minnesota

Attrice statunitense. Nata nel Minnesota da una famiglia di attori teatrali, esordisce sul palcoscenico all'età di due anni assieme alle due sorelle maggiori. Trasferitasi a Hollywood, nel 1934 viene messa sotto contratto dalla mgm, che ne farà una stella del cinema a costo di rovinarne la salute fisica e mentale. Con il suo terzo film, Follie di Broadway 1938 (1938) di R. Del Ruth, raggiunge il successo che le permetterà di interpretare il ruolo a cui resterà maggiormente legata: Dorothy Gale in Il mago di Oz (1939) di V. Fleming, nel quale canta la celeberrima canzone «Over the Rainbow». È in questo periodo che comincia ad assumere droghe per non ingrassare e per sopravvivere ai ritmi forsennati della macchina cinema. Nel 1944 recita in Incontriamoci a Saint Louis di V.
