Si diploma al Liceo francese di New York e frequenta il College, per approdare poi in Europa a completare la sua formazione. A 19 anni scrive il suo primo romanzo (Going Home) che verrà pubblicato solo nel 1973 (Due mondi due amori). Nel 1989 è iscritta al Guinness dei primati per il maggior numero di settimane consecutive (381) in cui un suo libro permane in classifica.
