Whitechapel
Prologue In 1952, the Church of St Mary Matfelon in Whitechapel was finally brought down, its Blitz-shattered bones surrendered to demolition crews who claimed they were only finishing what the Luftwaffe had begun. Yet even then, people whispered that the ruin had merely exposed what had always lurked beneath. They said the old church—older than its last incarnation, older than its own foundations—had been haunted by its past. That there were victims. That its fall was no surprise. That perhaps it was right and fitting for the place to be erased from memory. But before the final stone was prised from the earth, something stirred. Those who had been wronged long ago rose again, their presence thin as breath yet sharp as frost. Mischievous, restless, and unquiet, the children's spirits pressed against the veil, determined to remind the living that they had never truly gone. They would not rest—until their story of how they were wronged was finally heard. They found their way into the world through the most unlikely vessel: a stuffed bear. It had lain buried beneath the rubble for twelve long years, remarkably untouched—unscathed by the blast that should have torn it to shreds. While stone had shattered and iron had twisted, the little bear endured, preserved as though some unseen hand had shielded it from the firestorm. It passed quietly into the hands of a young girl named Susan. And when the bear began to speak, Susan did the one thing no one else ever had. She listened.
