Nome d'arte di Julia Elizabeth Wells, attrice statunitense di origine inglese. Figlia d'arte, approda nel 1954 a Broadway dove, forte delle sue naturali doti di cantante, ottiene grande successo in numerosi musical, fra i quali My Fair Lady (1956). Al canto è legato anche il suo esordio nel cinema con Mary Poppins (1964) di R. Stevenson, nella parte della governante tuttofare che le vale l'Oscar come migliore attrice. Recita poi nella satira antimilitarista Tempo di guerra, tempo d'amore (1964) di A. Hiller e veste di nuovo i panni della governante in Tutti insieme appassionatamente (1965) di R. Wise, guadagnando una nomination all'Oscar. Ormai affermata e celebre, si impegna in ruoli diversi dalla commedia in Hawaii (1966) di G. R. Hill, dall'omonimo romanzo d'avventura di J.
