Fats Waller

1904, New York

Propr. Thomas Wright Waller. Pianista, cantante e compositore statunitense di jazz. Cresciuto alla scuola di Harlem e continuatore dello stile di James P. Johnson, fu il primo pianista, dopo quelli di blues e di boogie woogie, a non risentire suggestioni di matrice europea. La generosa vena umoristica, presente anche nelle sue esibizioni vocali, gli consentì di ribaltare il materiale canzonettistico, da lui utilizzato come spunto. Nello stesso tempo i suoi assolo pianistici mostravano, accanto a una tecnica cristallina, una profonda padronanza in campo armonico, grande senso dell'invenzione melodica e forte senso ritmico. Fu anche il primo a impiegare l'organo nel jazz. Tra le sue composizioni più famose: Honeysuckle rose, Ain't misbehavin', Alligator crawl.
