1911, Cadegliano, Varese

Compositore. Iniziati gli studi al conservatorio di Milano, si trasferì negli Stati Uniti, dove li proseguì al Curtis Institute di Filadelfia, con R. Scalero. Alla sua intensa attività di compositore ha affiancato quella di regista (soprattutto delle sue opere) e di organizzatore; ha creato e diretto dal 1958 il festival dei Due Mondi di Spoleto. Come operista ha raggiunto notorietà internazionale sin dalla sua prima opera, Amelia al ballo (1937), nella quale sono già individuabili i caratteri di un linguaggio che nella produzione successiva troverà compiuta espressione: una inventiva melodica di immediata comunicabilità; una scaltra scrittura musicale, ecletticamente improntata a moduli operistici ottocenteschi e pucciniani; la conoscenza dei meccanismi del mestiere teatrale, che si coglie...
