The Archivist

In the climate-controlled depths of a university archive, a senior archivist discovers an uncatalogued box containing the personal effects of Dr. Erik Versen—a Baltic history scholar who died in Latvia under unexplained circumstances in 2010. Inside: a handwritten research journal chronicling Versen's investigation of the Wrangel estate, a decaying manor house in rural Kurzeme. What began as routine archival work became something far darker when Versen opened a sealed mausoleum and spoke a name that had been forbidden for two hundred years. As the archivist pieces together Versen's account—from the Graf's mysterious "black pilgrimage" to Chorazin, to the hooded companion that followed him home, to the final desperate entries written in a Stockholm apartment—the past begins to bleed into the present. The research leads to more questions. The questions demand answers. And the answers carry a terrible price. A reimagining of M.R. James's classic ghost story "Count Magnus," The Archivist is a chilling exploration of the dangers of forbidden knowledge, the weight of the past, and the things that wait in darkness for scholars foolish enough to call their names. For fans of academic horror, antiquarian ghost stories, and tales that linger long after the final page.
