Nata da padre britannico e madre americana, Rosamond Lehmann viene educata in casa fino a 18 anni, quando partirà per frequentare il Girton College. Negli anni dell’infanzia respirerà il clima intellettuale della sua benestante famiglia: il padre fondò la rivista “Granta “ e fu giornalista al “Daily News”, nonché editor per il “Punch”. Il fratello John diventerà scrittore ed editore, e la sorella Beatrix un’attrice. La piccola Rosamond vive contornata di tate e domestici e ha libero accesso alla sterminata biblioteca paterna: racconterà lei stessa di formarsi sulle pagine di Browning, Arnold, Keats, Shelley, Byron e James; con frequenti incursioni, su consiglio materno, nella prosa di Edith Warton.
