Pseud. di William Clarence Eckstein. Cantante, compositore e direttore statunitense d'orchestra jazz e leggera. Dopo avere cantato dal 1939 al '43 nell'orchestra di Earl Hines, si avvicinò ai moduli sonori del bop. Nella sua orchestra, dal '44 al '46, sono stati presenti solisti come Fats Navarro, Dizzy Gillespie, Sarah Vaughan, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Dexter Gordon. Si dedicò in seguito a un repertorio più popolare.
