Johnny Hodges

1906, Cambridge, Massachusetts

Altosassofonista statunitense di jazz. Fu la voce solista più caratteristica dell'orchestra di Duke Ellington, con cui suonò dal 1928 fino alla morte, salvo il periodo dal 1951 al '55, quando diresse una propria orchestra. È stato uno dei maggiori solisti nella storia del jazz, dallo stile assai imitato ma inconfondibile, caratterizzato da frequenti glissando. La matrice del suo lirismo è il blues più autentico. Impiegò, talora, anche il sax soprano.
