Propr. Achille-Claude Debussy. Compositore francese.L'itinerario artistico e le opere principali. Figlio di piccoli commercianti di porcellane, entrò al conservatorio di Parigi nel 1872, studiando il pianoforte con A.-F. Marmontel e la composizione con E. Giraud. Nel 1884 ottenne il Prix de Rome con la scena lirica L'enfant prodigue (Il figliuol prodigo). A Roma, dove soggiornò dal 1885 all'87, scrisse La demoiselle élue (La fanciulla eletta), su testo di D.G. Rossetti. Rientrato a Parigi, prese a frequentare il salotto di Mallarmé e altri ambienti artistici legati al simbolismo e all'impressionismo. S'interessò, nel frattempo, all'opera di Wagner (viaggi a Bayreuth nel 1888 e nel 1889), al Boris di Musorgskij, alle musiche giavanesi ascoltate all'Esposizione di Parigi nel 1889.
