Code and Being
Is time real? Is the self a construction? Is consciousness the universe's way of knowing itself? Code and Being begins with a fact physics has established and rarely advertised: at the most fundamental level, time does not exist. The Wheeler-DeWitt equation — quantum mechanics applied to the universe as a whole — contains no time variable. Space itself emerges from entanglement. And consciousness, Caravella argues, is precisely the process by which this timeless quantum ground generates the experience of being a self in a world. Drawing on Wheeler, Friston, Penrose, Whitehead, Nagarjuna, Marx, and Ostrom, the book builds a unified framework that spans quantum gravity, evolutionary biology, neuroscience, and political economy. It confronts the hard problem of consciousness, the simulation hypothesis, the genetics of awareness, the Fermi paradox, and the question of free will — showing how each illuminates a different face of the same underlying structure. But the book does not stop at cosmology. The attention economy, Caravella argues, constitutes a systematic attack on the very processes by which genuine consciousness forms. Algorithmic systems optimised for engagement are degrading collective memory and authentic thought. And five scenarios for civilisational futures — from techno-feudalism to algorithmic commons — are evaluated against a single criterion: which arrangements support genuine collective self-revision, and which prevent it? Code and Being is philosophically rigorous, scientifically honest, and written with the conviction that these are not academic questions. They are the questions that determine what we are — and what we owe to the fact of our existence. Code and Being maps a path toward regeneration — through contemplative practice, participatory community, and a politics of cognitive sovereignty — and closes with a return to the question it began with: what does it mean to be, when being itself turns out to be generated from something timeless? A rare achievement: philosophically rigorous, scientifically honest, and written with the conviction that these are not academic questions — they are the questions that determine what we are, and what we owe to the fact of our existence.
