Michael McDowell è stato un autore e sceneggiatore statunitense. Si è laureato in inglese ad Harvard e ha conseguito un dottorato di ricerca a Brandeis. Ha lavorato come insegnante, critico teatrale e segretario. È stato autore di più di venticinque romanzi e sceneggiature, tra cui quella del film Beetlejuice - Spiritello porcello. La casa editrice Neri Pozza ha portato in Italia, a partire dal 2023, la saga gothic-horror di Blackwater, ambientata nella cittadina di Perdido sconvolta da una devastante alluvione.
