Dexter Gordon

1923, Los Angeles

Tenorsassofonista statunitense di jazz. Suonò negli anni della guerra nelle orchestre di Lionel Hampton e Billy Eckstine, poi tra gli altri con Charlie Parker e Dizzy Gillespie. La sua sonorità, inizialmente derivata da Lester Young, influì su John Coltrane, che poi lo ispirò a sua volta. Famosi i suoi duetti-duello con altri tenorsassofonisti come Wardell Gray, Gene Ammons e Teddy Edwards. Dal 1962 alternò l'attività fra Stati Uniti ed Europa, stabilendosi soprattutto in Danimarca. Nel 1985 interpretò la parte del protagonista nel film Round midnight (A mezzanotte circa) di Bertrand Tavernier.
