Compositore tedesco.Gli anni di formazione. Figlio di un editore umanista, August S., noto per aver pubblicato un'edizione tascabile dei classici di tutto il mondo, crebbe in un ambiente familiare estremamente favorevole allo sviluppo dei suoi vasti interessi letterari e musicali, in un'epoca e in un clima nazionale percorsi dai fermenti del più schietto romanticismo. A sei anni iniziò privatamente la sua istruzione con l'arcidiacono Döhner; fu l'organista di S. Maria, J.G. Kuntsch, ad avviarlo allo studio della musica. Tre anni dopo il padre lo portò a Karlsbad ad ascoltare Moscheles, uno dei più grandi pianisti del tempo: e il piccolo Robert volle diventare pianista; il che non gli impedì di seguire con grande entusiasmo anche la poesia, durante gli studi ginnasiali iniziati nella città...
