First published in this Cambridge edition during 1910, as the second of two volumes making up The Complete Works of George Gascoigne, this book contains the original texts of The Glasse of Governement, The Princely Pleasures at Kenelworth Castle and The Steele Glas, together with other poems and prose works. George Gascoigne

(Cardington, Bedfordshire, 1535 ca - Stanford 1577) poeta e drammaturgo inglese. Ispiratosi ad autori del rinascimento italiano, introdusse in Inghilterra nuovi generi letterari: scrisse la prima commedia in prosa, Supposes (1566), adattata dai Suppositi di Ariosto; la prima satira regolare, di acceso fervore moralistico, Lo specchio d’acciaio (The steele glasse, 1576); e una delle prime tragedie in blank verse, Jocasta (1575), da una versione italiana di Euripide. Le sue poesie, per lo più di soggetto amatorio, sono raccolte in Cento fiori diversi (A hundred sundrie flowers, 1573).
