Sarah Orne Jewett

(South Berwick, Maine, 1849-1909) scrittrice statunitense. Cresciuta nel Maine nell’epoca di transizione tra mercantilismo e industrialismo, ne descrisse con limpida malinconica immediatezza il declino, imponendosi come una delle voci più incisive della letteratura regionale. Nei suoi racconti (Deephaven, 1877; Airone bianco, A white heron, 1877) e romanzi (Il paese degli abeti aguzzi, The country of the pointed firs, 1896) i porti deserti, ridotti a luoghi di villeggiatura, le campagne abbandonate, i costumi in mutamento, le rare sopravvivenze del passato, sono intessuti con precisione e ironia in un delicato arazzo.
