The Custody Gap

A dead man inside a secure police evidence room. A camera that shows nobody entering. And a murder weapon logged into custody hours before the murder occurred. Detective Mara Veysey knows better than to trust a perfect record. When evidence-control supervisor Warren Vale is found murdered inside one of the most secure rooms in the police department, the electronic trail appears impossible. Vale entered alone. No one followed him. The doors remained locked. Then Mara discovers six missing minutes in the security footage—and a barcode tied to a homicide case Vale had secretly been investigating. The deeper she digs, the worse the evidence becomes. A murder weapon appears in police custody before the crime was committed. Evidence labels were printed for items that did not yet exist. Administrative accounts altered records without leaving the history investigators expected to find. And an old system designed for legitimate emergencies may have created the perfect mechanism for manufacturing a chain of custody. As prosecutors, defense attorneys, forensic specialists, and police officials collide over what can be trusted, Mara must reconstruct not only a murder but an entire hidden history buried inside the department's own records. Because someone discovered the gap between what happened and what the system says happened. And Warren Vale died trying to prove it. The Custody Gap is a tightly plotted police procedural and crime thriller about forensic evidence, institutional secrecy, wrongful accusation, and the dangerous difference between a record and the truth.
