Compositore e teorico tedesco. Organista e maestro di cappella, è una delle figure di maggior rilievo della musica tedesca nel periodo di transizione dal rinascimento al barocco: la sua intensa attività di compositore (basti ricordare la raccolta in nove parti Musae Sioniae, 1605-10), comprendente oltre 1200 composizioni vocali sacre, ha contribuito notevolmente a formare la tradizione musicale liturgica luterana e si basa per lo più sulla elaborazione di corali e Kirchenlieder, desunti da regioni anche geograficamente lontane con criteri di unificazione. Non meno importante è l'attività di teorico, culminante nel Syntagma musicum (1615-19), in tre parti: la prima e la terza, scritte in latino, contengono rispettivamente una trattazione storica e notizie su forme e tecniche, la seconda, in...
