(Fonthill Gifford, Wiltshire, 1759 - Bath 1844) scrittore inglese. Oltre a due libri di viaggi, uno dei quali dedicato all’Italia, scrisse in francese un racconto fantastico, Vathek, tradotto in inglese nel 1786 e carissimo a Byron. D’argomento orientale, sul modello di Voltaire, esso illustra il gusto preromantico per l’esotismo, con richiami al romanzo «gotico» e alla fantasia erotica dei racconti di Sade.
