Filled with nuances, such as the athleticism of the first vocal phrase to convey the youth's energy and freshness of purpose, Schubert breaks open the music in startling rapture with any and all classical notions of song form. This song cycle is a masterpiece of Shakespearean depth and complexity. John Elwes and Kenneth Slowik are at their best!

Compositore austriaco.Gli anni di formazione e i primi lavori. Figlio di un maestro originario della Slesia, trascorse tutta la sua esistenza, tranne qualche giro turistico e due brevi periodi di insegnamento in Ungheria, a Vienna e nei suoi immediati dintorni. Nel 1808, grazie al suo talento musicale, poté entrare a far parte del coro della cappella della corte imperiale. Come fanciullo cantore frequentò anche il seminario imperiale, dove ricevette una buona istruzione. Nel 1813, respinta l'offerta di un'altra borsa di studio, lasciò la scuola per far pratica come insegnante, studiando nel frattempo la composizione con Antonio Salieri, che già aveva notato il suo talento.
