Baritono tedesco. Dopo l'esordio a Wiesbaden nel 1952, apparve sulle maggiori scene internazionali, affermandosi come grande interprete di Mozart, Wagner e R. Strauss, ma anche dell'operetta viennese grazie alle squisite doti di attore e di fraseggiatore maturate attraverso un'assidua frequentazione liederistica (soprattutto Schubert). Affrontò anche il repertorio oratoriale.
