Compositore tedesco. Le vicende biografiche. Di famiglia colta e agiata, visse a Berlino dal 1811, ricevendo un'accuratissima educazione letteraria e musicale e rivelando doti di fanciullo prodigio. Da C.F. Zelter, suo maestro e direttore della Singakademie, apprese ben presto ad amare Bach e i classici della musica sacra. Nel 1821 divenne amico del vecchio Goethe; conobbe Weber e nel 1825, durante un viaggio a Parigi, Meyerbeer e Cherubini. Dal 1827 al '29 frequentò l'università di Berlino e nel 1829 esordì come direttore riesumando la Passione secondo Matteo; l'esecuzione segnò l'inizio della rivalutazione di Bach, allora quasi dimenticato. Nello stesso anno compì un viaggio in Inghilterra e Scozia, nel 1830 in Italia (Venezia, Firenze, Roma, Napoli), ricevendone profonde impressioni. Nel...

London Symphony Orchestra

La più antica e prestigiosa delle orchestre londinesi. Fondata nel 1904 e composta all'inizio da una quarantina di elementi provenienti dalla Queen's Hall Orchestra, è sempre stata gestita direttamente dai suoi componenti attraverso un comitato a cui spetta di invitare i direttori ospiti; fra i molti famosi che si avvicendarono sul podio, ebbero titolo di direttori principali H. Richter (1904), A. Nikisch (1905-14), che la guidò nel 1912 in una prima tournée negli usa, J. Krips (1950-54), P. Monteux (1961-64), I. Kertész (1965-68). Pur non sorretta da alcun patronato, l'orchestra conquistò rapidamente un'altissima reputazione internazionale, confermata da una seconda tournée americana del 1963, e da una intorno al mondo nel 1964.
