"Regista e attore statunitense. Re del cinema off americano tra freaks e cultura trash, ambienta tutti i suoi film nella Baltimora natale, paradigma della provincia americana. Esordiente one man band (sceneggiatore, regista, attore, produttore) in 16mm nel circuito indipendente (Hand In a Black Leather Jacket, 1964), costituisce un team affiatato di tecnici e di attori tra cui il versatile Divine (H.G. Milstead), irresistibile travestito in sovrappeso (Mondo Trasho, 1969). Superati i confini del circuito locale (Pink Flamingos, 1972), mette in scena una serie di rivincite al femminile sulla società piccolo-borghese: nel grottesco e anti-hollywoodiano Nuovo Punk Story (1977), nella love story in odorama di Polyester (1981). Con canoni produttivi riportati alla «normalità», non perde in visionarietà...
