Four ordinary bricks. One warning he should have listened to. All twenty-year-old pharmacy student Lwazi Ndlovu wants is a room he can afford, a door he can close, and somewhere to study that isn't a friend's lounge floor. The damp house in Makhanda offers him all three. There is only one condition: the bricks beneath his bed must stay exactly where they are. His landlady has measured the height. Every corner of the mattress must remain above the pencil line on the wall. Even with someone lying on it. Lwazi knows the stories behind that warning. He remembers his grandmother's house, the candles during power cuts, and the name spoken when the passage beyond the light seemed too long. Tokoloshe. But he has grown up. He studies science. He understands sleep paralysis, strange noises in old buildings, and the tricks an exhausted mind can play. Four chipped bricks should have no power over him. Then his friends arrive with takeaway food, laughter, and a dare. One night without the bricks. He lifts the bed. He removes the supports. He sends a photograph to prove there is nothing to fear. By midnight, the laughter has gone. Rain rattles across the roof. The electricity fails. Something scratches inside the wardrobe. A smell like mud dragged from the bottom of still water gathers around the mattress. His blanket moves when he is almost asleep. And when he pulls it back, something underneath pulls harder. What follows is a single night in a room that grows more dangerous with every attempt to understand it. Small objects change places. Familiar sounds acquire a terrible purpose. The floor between the bed and the door becomes a distance Lwazi cannot cross. Help reaches the window. Lwazi can see the door and hear his friends on the other side. He still has to reach it. As batteries drain and the rain closes around the house, Lwazi must confront the warning he laughed at and the shame that kept him from admitting he was afraid. The people who joined in the joke return to find him trapped, and discover how little comfort a torch, a toolbox, or an open door can offer when something is waiting below the mattress. The bricks are still somewhere in the room. Getting them back will mean reaching into the dark. Four Bricks is an atmospheric supernatural horror short story rooted in modern South African tokoloshe folklore. Set over one night, it draws its terror from wet floorboards, failing light, the pressure of unseen hands, and the dreadful intimacy of sharing a small space with something you cannot make leave. At its heart are the bonds between friends, the cost of wanting to appear fearless, and a young man forced to listen to the voices he once dismissed. The danger stays close enough to hear breathing. Relief comes in inches. Even an ordinary piece of furniture can become the only place left to survive. Some warnings survive because somebody remembers what happens when they are ignored. Keep the bed high. Keep the blanket off the floor.
