Trombettista statunitense di jazz. Dal '45 al '48 suonò con Charlie Parker, al cui stile contrappose un proprio solismo lirico e riflessivo, più parsimonioso di note; nel '48-49 si avvicinò al cool jazz (incisioni con Lee Konitz, Gerry Mulligan ecc.), distinguendosene per una più incisiva vena ritmica e pudicamente blues. Queste qualità, unite a un suono essenziale e lancinante, emersero più chiaramente negli anni successivi, durante i quali D. poté essere considerato il più originale musicista jazz fra l'esperienza bop e lo hard bop. Con lo storico quintetto fondato nel '55 (comprendente John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, e Philly Joe Jones) e con il gruppo del '58-60, sempre con Coltrane, D. utilizzò scale modali (assorbendo...
