He attends the vigil of a dying Pope John Paul II and takes his twins to the Pantheon in December to wait for snow to fall through the oculus. He and his family are embraced by the butchers, grocers, and bakers of the neighbourhood, whose clamour of stories and idiosyncratic child-rearing advice is as compelling as the city itself. This intimate and revelatory book is a celebration of Rome, a wondrous look at new parenthood and a fascinating account of the alchemy of writers. 1973, Cleveland

Scrittore americano.Cresciuto a Novelty, in Ohio, Doerr ha frequentato la University School, diplomandosi nel 1991. Nel 1995 consegue la laurea in storia al Bowdoin College di Brunswick, nel Maine, e ottiene un MFA (Master of Fine Arts) alla Bowling Green State University.Sposato e padre di due figli, vive attualmente a Boise, nell'IdahoLa sua prima pubblicazione è stata una raccolta di racconti brevi, The Shell Collector (2002), ambientati perlopiù in Africa o Nuova Zelanda, paesi nei quali  Doerr ha vissuto e lavorato. Memory Wall, altra raccolta di racconti, è pubblicata nel 2010. Il suo primo romanzo, About Grace, risale al 2004.
