The Gentleman in the Parlour is Maugham's tale of travel through Burma, Indochina and Siam in the 1920's, told with all of the empathy and sharp-eyed observation of human nature for which the author eventually became legendary. The idea of the journey had come on a voyage from Colombo, from a fellow passenger who had spent five years in Kengtung, and who "said he would sooner live there than anywhere else in the world." When Maugham asked him what it had offered him, he replied, "contentment." And Maugham captured, in his own inimitable style, the spirit of the people and places he chose to describe.

W. Somerset Maugham

William Somerset Maugham è stato uno scrittore inglese. Frequentò la King’s School di Canterbury e l’università di Heidelberg, dove si laureò in medicina, che poi abbandonò per dedicarsi alla letteratura. Il suo romanzo più noto e più ambizioso è Schiavo d’amore (Of human bondage, 1915); fra gli altri si ricordano: La luna e sei soldi (The moon and sixpence, 1919), Il velo dipinto (The painted veil, 1925), Ashenden l’inglese (Ashenden or the British agent, 1928), Lo scheletro nella credenza (Cakes and ale, 1930), Vacanze di Natale (A Christmas holiday, 1939), Il filo del rasoio (The razor’s edge, 1944), Catalina (1948). Scrisse anche commedie di successo, come Il cerchio (The circle, 1921) e Ad est di Suez...
